French Polishing

French Polishing
On this course you will practise all the steps involved in the historical art of French...
French polishing highlights the luminosity and translucency inherent in the structure of the wood like no other treatment method. From the 18th to the early 20th century, it was the finish of choice commonly used on fine furniture and musical instruments.
On this course you will practise all the steps involved in the historical art of French polishing, on sample plates (skinning in, bodying up, spiriting out) . You will learn how to create a polishing pad and how to prepare the lacquer and the surface. Depending on time, quality requirements and desired gloss level, you will get to know three techniques. You will work with shellac flakes dissolved by yourself and other products. While the polish is drying, you will have the opportunity to discuss any restoration questions you may have using examples (you are welcome to bring your own furniture or items).
