The acrylic infiltration resin was specially developed for stabilising wood and other open-pored natural materials (cones, nuts, minerals), especially for wood species with a low density and an open-pored structure (wood moisture < 7 %). Spalted wood, for example, can be infiltrated very well with resin. Stabilised wood is used for knife handles, handle scales, writing utensils, spice grinders, objects of art, etc.
Infiltration and stabilisation:
Stabilisation involves filling open-pored materials, e.g. the vessels in woody tissue, with resin and supporting the cell walls. This limits or eliminates the physical wood properties such as swelling and shrinkage and the resulting stresses and material deformations. Among other things, the wood can thus no longer absorb moisture, remains stable and is also easier to work mechanically. After infiltration, the still liquid resin must be cured under heat in a heating cabinet or suitable drying oven at 95 to 105 °C.
Infiltration methods:
  • Simple method: Soak the workpiece in resin and weigh it down with a weight to prevent it from floating. The resin has a low penetration depth with this method, making it suitable only for porous and small workpieces.
  • Capillary infiltration: The end-grain part of the wood is placed in the resin. The capillary effect pulls the resin upwards in the pores of the wood. Suitable for short workpieces such as cross-grain pen blanks or handles.
  • Vacuum method: Fastest and best method. By creating a vacuum, a strong suction effect is generated in the material, which allows the resin to penetrate quickly and deeply into the pores of the wood. This method, which requires a vacuum pump and chamber, gives the best results.

Advantages and properties of Novacure:
  • Material stresses are eliminated
  • Very good machining (sawing, milling, turning, etc.)
  • Particularly thin, odourless and very clear (resin can also be dyed)
  • Makes your workpieces more resistant to (salt) water, humidity, temperature fluctuations and many acids and solvents
  • Stabilises (hardens) spalted and rotten wood
  • Less bleeding (staining due to wood ingredients) of the wood
  • Resin residues/excess can be reused (shelf life up to 4-6 months after adding the hardener)
  • Hardly any foaming in vacuum
Incl. hardener and instructions for use in vacuum chambers.
