Kutzall sanding and milling tools: tips for woodworking
The US manufacturer Kutzall specialises in the highest-quality tools for working on surfaces. You will find abrasive discs, burrs and cup rasps in their range. The tools are coated with tungsten carbide which makes them extremely durable, with greater precision and even material removal. For different requirements there are tools with different surface textures, from coarse to fine. The »Structured Tooth« technology provides free-cutting tips and cools the tool during work, while also preventing vibrations and excessive load. With »Kutzall Original« rasp tools, you can work on harder woods particularly efficiently and cleanly, or with the coarse »Kutzall Extreme«, on damp and softer woods. All the abrasive discs, cup rasps and burrs are available in different grits.
What can I do with Kutzall tools?
The various configurations mean that you can use Kutzall rasp tools over the complete workflow for shaping wooden objects, sculpting, peeling, and for embellishing and decorating turned objects. Coarse rasps quickly remove material, while with the medium grit, you can refine the composition and with the fine one, polish surfaces and edges like with sandpaper, and work out the final details. Depending on the model, you can use Kutzall tools with an extensive array of different machines in a speed range of 5,000 to 15, 000 or up to 25 ,000 rpm: drills, milling motors, multitools or angle grinders are all options. The best-suited machines are those designed for machine carving and for finishing work, such as the Merlin2 long neck angle grinder from King Arthur’s Tools or the Arbortech Mini-Carver. The tungsten carbide-tipped burrs can also be used very efficiently on other materials such as fibreglass, plastics, solid rubber, polyurethane, silicone, soapstone and composite materials.
Note: Most drilling machines have a speed range up to a maximum of 3,000 or 5,000 rpm, which is a bit too slow for effective work with the Kutzall rasp tools.
Why do I need an adapter for my machine?
Kutzall rasps can be used with many different power tools, so you are not tied to a particular manufacturer. For example, the Kutzall burrs come in two different shaft diameters. The burrs with a 3.2 mm shaft (⅛ inch) fit in numerous multitools and high-speed milling motors, and those with a 6.3 mm shaft (¼ inch) fit in all drilling machines or in the clamping chuck of small milling machines. However, not all Kutzall rasp tools are necessarily compatible with all manufacturers. To help more woodworkers unlock the potential of Kutzall products, we offer adapters for various power tools. All our adapters are guaranteed high-quality, robust and precisely manufactured from 100% stainless steel.
Kutzall rasps can also be used on angle grinders with the appropriate adapter
What adapters are there for Kutzall cup rasps?
With the adapter for angle grinders with an M14 spindle thread you can use all Kutzall cup rasps, with or without a rubber insert, on conventional angle grinders with an M14 toolholder.
If you have a King Arthur’s Tools Merlin2, with the adapter for Kutzall Cup Rasps on Merlin2 you can use cup rasps with a diameter up to 45 mm on it, for example, the tungsten carbide-tipped Original Cup Rasp, fine or the Original Cup Rasp, medium.
The small rasps with a diameter of 45 mm fit perfectly with the Merlin2
There is also an adapter to fit the Arbortech Mini-Carver. But please note that the adapter for Kutzall cup rasps on Arbortech Mini-Carver only fits the newer Mini-Carver models with an M5 thread. With this adapter you can use all cup rasps from 45 to 50 mm in diameter, e.g. the Original tungsten carbide-tipped cup rasp, Ø 50 mm, fine.
The mandrel for Kutzall® cup rasps has a shaft diameter of 6.4 mm and is for fitting all Kutzall cup rasps and other rotary tools with a 9.5 mm bore diameter onto drilling machines, grinders and flexible shafts.

Which adapters are there for Kutzall burrs?
Kutzall burrs come in shaft diameter size 3.2 and 6.3 mm. That means you can use the burrs on a wide range of milling motors and multitools without an adapter. With the adapter for Kutzall burr on Arbortech Mini-Carver you can use all Kutzall burrs on the Mini-Carver as well. There is an adapter for each shaft diameter, the only prerequisite is an M5 thread on the Mini-Carver.
Suitable adapters are available for milling cutters with 3.2 and 6.3 mm shaft diameters
Which adapters are there for Kutzall abrasive discs?
You can also use the mandrel for Kutzall cup rasps on the Kutzall abrasive discs; it has a ⅜ inch x 24 tpi left-hand thread that fits. One of these threads is also located on one side of the adapter for Kutzall abrasive discs Ø 50 on the Arbortech Mini-Carver. On the opposite side there is an M5 thread for the Mini-Carver, so that you can use the Original Abrasive Disc, fine and the Original, medium on the versatile carving machine.

How do you fit the adapters?
Fitting an adapter for Kutzall rasp tools is relatively easy and for adapters which are a bit more complicated to use, detailed instructions are provided. Think safety first and always disconnect machines from the mains during all setting-up work.
All adapters for Kutzall cup rasps are supplied with a screw to fasten all the separate parts (shaft, cup rasp and/or insert or pressure washer) on the toolholder. The adapters each have the right notches (rabbets) for the machine, with which they centre themselves. In our video [in German] we present the various adapters in detail and show you how to fit them properly. With the adapter for Kutzall burr on Arbortech Mini-Carver it is important that the collet chuck is connected (clicks in) with the nut before it is inserted into the adapter shaft. Otherwise it may not be possible to remove the collet chuck from the adapter any longer. The principle is the same as for a collet chuck for routing, whose construction and exchange we also explain in detail in a video [in German].
